ABOUT

John Contreras received his BA in Art and his Minor in Education from the University of California, Santa Cruz, as well as his MFA in Spatial Arts from San José State University. A Veteran of the Afghanistan war, a first-generation college student, a son of immigrants; he is interested in addressing ideas of access, violence, power and the breaking out of one's place or position. He wants to bring these conversations and talk about experiences of homelessness, gun violence, domestic violence, and military might.
His explorations into the role art can play express complex conversations and move beyond personal battles enriching his creative investigations in trauma, memory, and loss through a journey of sculpting. His drive to produce artwork comes directly from his personal experiences and culminate in larger conversations of access.
